Big, open room, with a balcony and an impressively large stage. Folding chairs held about 200 people, and I think Bird's folks (who were present) had a big hand in rounding up most of the audience. I was only one of about maybe a dozen people there under the age of 50. Which was a surprising and fun change from most of his shows. It had the feel of some kind of small-town recital (or wedding reception as there was a buffet and free wine being handed out...I half expected someone to start making toasts). The crowd was, I think, mostly unfamiliar with Bird and his music, but they were very appreciative (and quiet during the songs!). I think the majority of them left with newly purchased cd's. Bird and Nora did 2 sets, and the acoustics of the room lent itself perfectly with the echoey sound that Bird so loves. The minimal sound system (a small PA for vocals, and their 2 amps) gave the impression of a nearly acoustic set. And actually, they did do 3 songs totally acoustically. They got down off the stage, stood at the front of the room and belted out a few tunes at the end of both sets, it was fan-freakin' tastic! He did a bunch of songs that are extreme rarities for him (Nuthinduan Waltz, Waiting to Talk, the Happy Birthday song) and a few covers that I couldn't catch the names of, but ones I've never heard him do. Nora sang on 3 songs, and once again showed us how lucky we all are that these two found each other. They sound so perfect together and they have that rare performance chemistry that makes you think they must've known each other in a former life. The night provided a few moments of hilarity, specifically at the start of the second set, when the siren from the fire station next door went off exactly as Bird finished his violin intro to "Why". It was timed perfectly, and he even played along at the end as it mournfully wound down. The last tune he played was a beautiful old fiddle tune (he said the name but I couldn't catch it), played acoustically with as much soul and skill as you could ever ask for. It was a rare moment, Bird, inches away, playing without any amplification or accoutrements. Intimate and perfect. Bird has been in the studio (in Nashville) for the past few weeks at least, working on the next album and hasn't been doing much performing, so he made a few comments about being rusty, but I had to take his word for it...he sounded brilliant as usual. And he really seemed to be enjoying himself in that space, and with that crowd- he was all smiles. - Julia flac fingerprint: abird2003-03-27d1t01.flac:22e5f5a32f97c7343e82b27665c22b1c abird2003-03-27d1t02.flac:091ac8d3eedc76cad260e47b906fc664 abird2003-03-27d1t03.flac:23fea0523d8b900925e95543fa51779d abird2003-03-27d1t04.flac:cd1c2eed559f5963490b26c37aac7551 abird2003-03-27d1t05.flac:9f169a4daa76c881ccfec938fc2372db abird2003-03-27d1t06.flac:ba5b7f9560c3edd9e30ea9acf8c287d7 abird2003-03-27d1t07.flac:e242ed1d880242e51d6e1424633ec90f abird2003-03-27d1t08.flac:28383da8d8acdb2cbd28ac8774566790 abird2003-03-27d1t09.flac:194f04eeaee52ba518c159836d630e05 abird2003-03-27d1t10.flac:b35ba02d8a3a9eab024c2184cb831cec abird2003-03-27d2t01.flac:47b22d87dac08502d3beac9cbd59ac2e abird2003-03-27d2t02.flac:48b02c95cfe2b7c6d31b571a7684c0a0 abird2003-03-27d2t03.flac:46e7a7dc8e007f6beb2c461d21ab26f3 abird2003-03-27d2t04.flac:9944c7ff1d603700dac87e714c262c86 abird2003-03-27d2t05.flac:2c668347a178b17de1cdcd5fd507a29b abird2003-03-27d2t06.flac:77a2a59d80dbbc3a66668deda30024cd abird2003-03-27d2t07.flac:e58406da8869c087467519e9ffb9d48b abird2003-03-27d2t08.flac:808cae7c62baa6b0ba46b5ddddb68a7e abird2003-03-27d2t09.flac:46abdc94ab39b0a60e8badcc6aa36ff5 abird2003-03-27d2t10.flac:473c806188a833cdd7272d0e243dfab4 abird2003-03-27d2t11.flac:39102041a5d7239cd2bbab5bc91f90f1
